Geographical Indication: Agricultural Goods Miniature Sheet (GI Tags)

Geographical indications (GIs) are intellectual property rights that identify products originating from specific regions, highlighting their unique qualities, reputation, or characteristics linked to their origin. The Indian government implemented the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act in 1999, which became effective in September 2003. Protecting and promoting these GIs is essential as they are integral to our cultural and intellectual heritage. These treasures, deeply rooted in Indian traditions, deserve global recognition.

Local farmers cultivate Kashmir Saffron in the highlands of Jammu and Kashmir, the only saffron grown at an altitude of 1600m to 1800m above sea level. Chulli (Wild Apricot) thrives in Himachal Pradesh’s districts, while the Ganjam Kewda Flower grows in Odisha’s coastal areas. Assam’s Kaji Nemu (Assam Lemon) and Mahabaleshwar Strawberry, with its three major varieties, showcase India’s agricultural diversity.

Other notable GIs include Allahabad Surkha Guava, Shahi Litchi from Bihar, Naga Tree Tomato from Nagaland, Gir Kesar Mango from Gujarat, Bangalore Blue Grapes, Vazhakulam Pineapple from Kerala, and Eathomozhy Tall Coconut from Tamil Nadu. India Post issued a GI Tagged miniature sheet honouring these agricultural goods, celebrating India’s rich collective and intellectual heritage.
